Beep test level 2

Updated

Short answer

At level 2 of the Beep test, the required speed is 9 km/h: 8 shuttles of 8 s each. The level lasts 1 min 04 s; when it ends you have covered 300 m in 2 min 07 s. Completing it in full credits you with a MAS of 9 km/h, roughly 25 ml/min/kg of VO₂max.

The only full kilometre-per-hour jump in the chart is here, from 8 to 9 km/h. This is what separates the 8.0 version from Léger’s 8.5 version: in this one level 2 is at 9.0 km/h, and the two tables then coincide for good.

The previous level, 1, was run at 8 km/h. The next one, 3, moves to 9.5 km/h. On this test the gap between two levels is small in speed and large in feel, because fatigue carries over from one level to the next.

Frequently asked questions

What MAS does level 2 of the Beep test give?

A MAS of 9 km/h, provided you complete the level. If you stop midway, the scoring rule credits the last full level, so 8 km/h (level 1).

How long does level 2 last?

1 min 04 s, i.e. 8 shuttles of 8 s. From the start of the test that makes 2 min 07 s of running.

What pace per kilometre is this level?

9 km/h is 6:40 /km. That is the pace you would hold on a track, without the turns: in a shuttle the same figure costs more.
